Search Engine Stats
02.25.04 (12:20 pm)
I've seen 5 different sets of user stats pertaining to what humans are using what engines. I saw one comment that mentioned to take Googles #'s in half because it was probably people coming back, searching again... after they couldn't find what they were looking for - hilarious. :))

comScore Networks
Google = 35%
Yahoo = 27%
AOLTW = 16%
Microsft = 15%

The 7 largest search engines on the web according to OneStat are:

1. Google 55.2%
2. Yahoo 21.7%
3. MSN Search 9.6%
4. AOL Search 3.8%
5. Terra Lycos 2.6%
6. Altavista 2.2%
7. Askjeeves 1.5%

Nielsen/NetRatings
Google 39%
Yahoo 30%
MSN 29%
AOL 15%

One another note, from OneStat.com, we find this information:

The 7 most used word phrases in search engines on the web are:

1. 2 word phrases 32.58%
2. 3 word phrase 25.61%
3. 1 word phrases 19.02%
4. 4 word phrases 12.83%
5. 5 word phrases 5.64%
6. 6 word phrases 2.32%
7. 7 word phrases 0.98%

As with all stats, I suspect these will change over time. I would like to see Yahoo come out on top. Right now they're not only serving up some great results but RELEVANT results.

Yesterday while looking through a clients server logs I noticed she was found under a keyword phrase containing *Real Estate* something that had been culled by the latest change in Google. I've been reading that the results are looking better but still haven't found this to be across all industries.

Google eyes a gaggle of sites

By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY
Like McDonald's talking about selling "billions and billions" of hamburgers, Internet search giant Google said Tuesday that it now accesses more than 6 billion Web pages, images and online postings.

Yahoo, Google split fuels search competition

The Google-Yahoo divorce is final.

Yahoo said Wednesday that it had stopped using Google's search engine and is now relying on its own technology to provide what the company called ``more comprehensive and relevant'' results for users.

Yahoo bids farewell to Google partnership

Wednesday, February 18, 2004 Posted: 12:57 PM EST (1757 GMT)

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Google Inc. and Yahoo! Inc. are revving up their online search engines as the once-friendly business partners shift gears and prepare for what promises to be a fierce rivalry.

Yahoo dumps Google search technology
02.18.04 (11:22 am)
http://news.com.com/2100-1024_3-5160710.html?tag=nefd_top

I'm definetly seeing some great results on Yahoo. Totally diggin it! My clients are all *back*. I predict we'll be seeing a change in SE usage stats. Google is still serving up directory and info sites. It's been theorized that directory/info sites will be on the left, commercial/paid sites on the right. Kinda like the yellow pages and white pages of the phone book. It seems to me that if Google wants to stay in the game they're going to have to make some big changes (unmake big changes?). I've seen people discussing their kwp queires coming back to life but I've had yet to see this.

Holy Cow!!

Yahoo looks like they've done it! I don't see the *Powered by Google* logo at the bottom and my clients have all come back with their old GREAT ranking! This is great news.... I hope Google cops a clue and undoes whatever the hell they've done. There's talk of the results coming back in Google but I've had yet to see that as well....

Google Observations
02.11.04 (8:29 am)
It's been about a month since the FU II started. Here are some observations that I've noticed:

1) Serp's are returning directories now.

When I do a search, I get mostly amazon, dmoz, epinion type of sites. Directories and not human sites. My clients and their competitors are no where to be found, which is good, they all fell together... but not comforting as far as their rankings go.

2) Serp's have irrelevant results.

Some of the results make no sense at all now. For the first time ever I really think Google is *broke* and not just going through a major algorithm facelift. This could be why their heavily anticipated IPO was delayed.

This will be the year of the search engine showdown. With Google broke, Yahoo using their own technology, I think we'll definetly see some changes in useage trends. If Google doesn't get their act together they'll no longer be the SE darling of the world that they've grown accustomed to. Their problems of late have trickeld down to *Joe User* and people have started moving away from them for their searches. I know that I can't find what I'm looking for anymore although I can tweak the way I search in order to get what I want.... the average user probably isn't that savy to use all the search power that is available.

There is still hope... Google could get it together but I see Yahoo giving them a run for their money in the very near future. And who knows what Bill will do?

Only time will tell.

Google Still Hosed
02.05.04 (3:29 pm)
Google is still hosed, people are still upset and things aren't looking better although I DO notice some of the results changing. 90% of my clients are still off the radar map in Google but doing well in MSN. Google should be reindexing any day now and we should see SOME results changing although I wouldn't bet the farm. Maybe this why the IPO was delayed? They need to fix their mess first?

Things that make ya go *hmmmmmmmm*
